On Saturday, we took the train from Paris to Bayonne.  After checking into Mercure Bayonne Center, the Grande Hotel, we set out to explore Bayonne on a beautiful afternoon.  We visited the Basque Museum,  learning a great deal about the area.

Did you know about the Sister Cities of Volusia County Florida?  We are part of the Sister Cities International, linking cites together to foster cultural exchange and to “promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation.” Bayonne, France is one of three Sister Cites connected to Volusia County’s chapter.

We learned a lot about eating in France on this trip. Evan learned that ordering “coffee” gets you a tiny cup of espresso, not his preferred large mug with milk and sugar. We learned that good restaurants don’t open for dinner until 19:00 to 19:30 (7:00-7:30 pm).

We also stepped out of our  typical food comfort zone in Bayonne. For our late evening meal, we focused on local cuisine:  Evan’s meal included “Basque Pudding,” which turns out to be blood pudding, while Sara had duck’s hearts.  We were brave, and the food was quite good.
