We were proud to get out our earliest today, 6:53 AM. However, five minutes out, we realized we had forgot our hiking poles. Ok, so our day became ten minutes longer. It’s a long day, almost 14.2 miles, so we decided to have our bags sent ahead to Belarado
We enjoy starting out in the dark. Sara has a headlamp to help us find the markers in the dark. The colors are beautiful, as the sunrise lights the sky and makes the landscape golden. This morning’s lesson: Remember to look behind you as you go, look back at where you’ve come from. The sunrise is gorgeous: if we had never turned around we would’ve missed it.
Sara says she keeps thinking about vegetable soup or minestrone. She’s craving vegetables
Today’s walk was not especially pretty. Our path parallels the highway for miles, as we walk from one town to another. The first thing you see are the tall church steeples rising above the towns. But our long walk was surprisingly quick today as we walked into Belorado at 12:30. Amazing how the walk is much faster and easier without our heavy backpacks. The hotel in Belorado is really nice. We have a lovely, rustic looking room to ourselves. We settled in and then set in search of lunch.
We do get confused about mealtimes here in Spain. Restaurants often close at 2:00 and reopen at 7:00 or 8:00. But in this town our best choice didn’t open until 2 – except for drinks and pinchos. So we walked the town, found a farmers market in the town square, and returned to the hotel for tea and coffee. Then we went to lunch at 2:00.
Sara says she is always hungry. As if by magic, today’s menu offered vegetable soup and vegetable lasagna – and wine, of course – just the meal that Sara was craving. The cost of food and wine is incredibly low. Wine is often less than beer. Often there is a fixed-price menu of the day, usually with choices, including a starter, a main dish, and dessert – all for 9-11 euros.
Part of the film, The Way was filmed in Belorado. We found a stone in the sidewalk with the signature and handprint of Martin Sheen who starred in this film about the Camino. Watch it if you have the chance.
We dined tonight with Janine and Gil, from Australia. We really enjoy them and hope to connect even after the Camino. Unfortunately, they will leave the Camino In Burgos
This hotel was wonderful: the most comfortable beds – comfortable sheets and blankets – great night’s sleep. Really cute place.
