We did not sleep well since windows were open and the large church down the hill rang its bell to announce each hour. Hoping for an early start, we woke at 5:45am, but only to thunder and lightning. So we had a late start, but we enjoyed the opportunity to eat a light breakfast and visit with our friends from Holland and Denmark.
Once it was safe to walk, we headed toward Los Arcos, about six miles away, hoping to take our morning snack/rest/void stop there. We walked through an open area surrounded by asparagus plants and vineyards. We saw lovely olive trees among the hills and mountains that surround us. But we were still chased by thunder and lightning, and it rained while we stopped for lunch in Los Arcos. The mountains around us are often topped with rows of windmills.
Sara’s left shoulder is hurting, so she thinks of everything in her backpack: “What can I leave behind to lighten my load?” She committed herself to leaving something behind each day.
As the rain cleared, today’s walk was one of gently rolling hills with picturesque villages and church steeples in the distance
We arrived at tonight’s destination, Torres del Rio, in the early afternoon. Although they had no record of our reservation, there was still a room for us. We could stay in the dorms with 12 beds or have a private room. Hmmmm. So we splurged for an extra 40 euro to enjoy a private room with our own bathroom and a big window that opens to the country side. We’re so excited!
Settle in, take a quick shower, put on some clean clothes, and now it’s time for a beer and a glass of sangria (Sara hopes). We also enjoyed another community meal, included in the room price, with some of our other Camino friends. Life on the Camino is good!
