Stratford-on-Avon is all about Shakespeare. Will Shakespeare was born here, and lived here with his family when he was not off in London writing plays, performing and producing at the Globe Theater. Today Stratford is a lovely English town with plenty of great places to eat and shop, and more Shakespeare souvenirs than you can imagine, from refrigerator magnets to complete Renaissance English costumes. There are also statues of Shakespeare and of his better known characters. We also found some great and historic pubs in which to enjoy a pint, or two, along with stimulating conversation. In previous visits we saw the Shakespeare Birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage with its lovely gardens, so we skipped them this time. But do not miss them when you visit Stratford.
Boat Ride on the River Avon: Never before had we taken the boat ride along this lovely river. There’s a significant population of white swans, as we pass the impressive Royal Theater complex and then down through the countryside.
Walking the Streets and Shopping: Once again we enjoyed just walking the streets and shopping. There was also a small festival going on just a short walk from the theater, where we enjoyed an inexpensive lunch.
Royal Shakespeare Theater: As much as I love Startford-on-Avon, I cannot imagine visiting without taking in at least one play at the lovely theater complex along the River Avon. This time it was a personal favorite, As You Like It, that featured Geraldine James in the lead role of Rosalind. This interesting production featured the reunion of a cast which produced the same play here some thirty or more years ago. We enjoyed how this more mature cast had fun reprising those roles, originally designed for young lovers.
It was a brief but lovely visit, and I know we’ll return. But for now, it’s on to Liverpool.
